So how do the authorities decide which is the “real” frame with that number? BTW if you think it gets weird with vehicles, just have an issue with ATF about a pistol. One misread of an old beat up gun number and somebody gets an unexpected visit.

What gets me, is we’re talking about a damned 1950 frame (and that’s what we have, not a complete bike or even partially complete) that had been sitting in a boneyard for years and years. All of a sudden, after 65 years, the VIN happens to show up on two different bikes at the same damned time? And we bought it with the original title?
This is so fishy.
