This young man is of the age when schizophrenia usually first appears. If he is mentally ill, as the sheriff seems to think and his online statements appear to support, then yes, his views could radically change in much less than 3 years, while in college. Actually, a lot of people’s views change in 3 years of college. And some do go right instead of left. I tend to think that earlier comment was at best conjecture. But it is possible.
