Bibi hits the Hill

After a defiant speech to the AIPAC conference last night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hit the Hill Tuesday morning, meeting with GOP leaders, Jewish members, the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi before she rushed to Obama’s signing of the health care reform bill.

He showed up late for the 8am meeting with Jewish members and it was somewhat rushed, one Hill source said. Whatever matter was the focus of conversation, Netanyahu found a way to link it to Iran, the staffer said.

“He knows that this is something that is going to move members of Congress, even if they are angry about the expansion of Jewish housing, that they are going to Iran as a threat,” the staffer said. “He connected Iran to just about every subject that was raised.” He pushed members to a reconciled Iran sanctions bill to the president’s desk soon, even if there is collateral damage, e.g. if Iranian p eople are hurt by the sanctions, that is the price of peace, his argument was summarized.

Netanyahu also showed members a map of how Israel was still, he argued, “respecting 1967 conditions,” the staffer said.

…Netanyahu has a meeting and photo op with the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ken.) at 3:15PM. He then is due to meet with Obama tonight at the White House, no photos, no press.

Why not?
