My mother always told me that the first person in the household to write out the date in a new year will rule the household for the next year.

It’s one of those wives tales that makes sense: the person most likely to have a need to write the date is also likely the one that handles the household bills and other business dealings.

I can’t remember what the first thing I said in 2009 was.

I made sure that my first word in 2008 was “monkeys”.
