So where should a person more happy on snow shoes and a cheap Miller beer & shot of whisky go hang out? I’d not mind giving skiing a chance past the night that nearly destroyed my knee but I’d be damned if I know where to try it.

Stay in South Fork, CO and ski at Wolf Creek Ski Area. You could go the Pawn of the Oppressor way and stay on the west side of the pass in Pagosa Springs, with shops, restaurants, and hot springs. All (relatively) affordable.
