You’re right. Honestly, I always saw his upbringing as an excuse since you and many other Lizards have grown up in conservative households. I don’t know DF personally honestly but if what he would always say about his Dad was even close to be true, I do feel bad to a degree since no one should have to face ostracization from family for disagreeing politically.

The trouble is, it takes tremendous strength to maintain the double life that is being a closeted liberal in a conservative family. I use the terminology intentionally - it really is somewhat like being a closeted homosexual, only without the legislative protections that implies. The end results can often be as devastating to an individual if the “coming out of the closet” is poorly received. I can’t ever fault anybody for choosing the path of least resistance, even though I walk a different path.
