I am reminded of a quote from James Carville “If you want to tell me the Earth is only 5,000 years old, you are either really stuipd or really cynical and trying to get the votes of stupid people”.

Ditto that with AGW denial, supply-side economics, abstinence-only education, etc., and you get the entire dynamic behind modern conservatism: they guys at the Mitt Romey level do not buy into it, they just see that manipulating the gullible fundamentalists is the best way to ensure their tax breaks, freedom from government regulation and big bonuses.
