Another problem is that too many homes have only one parent. That does weigh against a child doing well. I’m not making a policy prescription, just noting for the record.

If the parent in the home makes education a priority, encourages learning, sets a good example, and creates an evironment where learning is possible, the kids will do well regardless whether there is one parent, two, or two complete households. The problem is, many of the people who are single parents are because they are selfish and tend not to think about the future. Irresponsible people make bad parents. Of course, I’m biased as I am a single parent. But that’s my take.
