I think it’s pretty evident that I have nothing but contempt for the hate peddlers like Limbaugh and the other cult demagogues.

However, I was watching CNN’s execrable coverage of Gaddafi’s death today, and they were showing photos of him as a young man, with his children, and so on. There was no sound and the captioning was fritzy, but I’m pretty sure the tone of the reporting wasn’t trying to apologise for or humanise him especially. Nonetheless, I was reminded of this piece, and this thread reminds me of it again.

It reminds me, basically, that no matter how hateful someone is, how deserving they are of our contempt, there’s also going to be people out there who know them and love them for other reasons. It’s poignant to remember that, despicable as they may be, they’re still human, and simultaneously sad to realise that their vileness is indeed part of the human condition that we all share.
