I’ve been reading Lynne Olson’s Last Hope Island, about the exiled governments in Great Britain during WWII.

Poland really had it bad. Invaded on both sides by the Germans and Soviet Union, abandoned by the allies in 1939 (or at least left to fend for themselves although war had been declared in their behalf by France and GB), and later, used and basically deceived by the allies as to the support Poland would receive after the war. The Poles made great contributions in their resistance efforts as well as towards breaking Enigma. But they got little to nothing in the end.
