re: #108 HoosierHoops

I’ll have to dig up the links…The whole theory in Physics that the speed of light has been slowing down since the big bang.. It explains alot of modern day observations with measurements and expansion…Of course this is a delicious conspiracy right up there with the gunman on the grassy knoll.. Physicist’s hate this idea and may end up on your front porch with a shotgun..
It was a fun post..

OK, so, suppose that you were being perverse, because you were a theorist, and you decided to play with certain mathematical aspects of string theory…

It turns out that you can indeed write string theories in which the speed of light might not be constant under certain specific conditions. It is important to understand that this is a fun mathematical exercise, and that it has no basis in reality yet.

We have absolutely no evidence for c changing in any observation I am aware of. Given how well we can measure c, and for how long we have been measuring c, it puts a strong upper limit on how fast c could possibly be changing. That is to say, if it is at all, it is doing so, no more than something astonishingly small like one part in a trillion, every several billion years. I remember reading a paper on the upper limit based on observed measurements of c a few years ago when the calculations first came out. The number I just quoted is to be taken as the real number “is something like.”

Short form no controversy, and I took the liberty of calling off your physicist hit squad.
