The official line from the Kremlin is that there have been zero deaths from coronavirus. Zip, zero not us. And if you report a case load over the official 400-whatever, then you can be arrested for essentially inciting public unrest. The doctors’ unions have been raising alarms for days that this is flatly untrue, putting themselves in danger from the government. Even the mayor of Moscow, a sociopathic crook like any other in the government, has been trying to tell the Kremlin that shit is bad and getting worse.

It’s hard to tell whether Putin believes the true extent of the problem or he’s in happy talk la la land. He has a great deal of interest in making things “normal” until the 22 April referendum-thing on letting him be president for life, but that’s a hell of a long way away in pandemic terms. And it’s not like his staff doesn’t lie to him on a constant basis.
