Well, there are plenty of people, even posters here, who “don’t see what the big deal is” about what McCrystal said. It’s astounding.

I must have missed the posts by any of the regulars here that support McChrystal. I have to doubt you on that.

Being ex-military myself, and with several friends who are ex-military, we all thought this was out-of-line and his being relieved was required. He showed a complete lack of judgment, leadership and trust. The President had to replace him.

What we cannot afford to do from both a military and political stand point is to give the appearance of backing out on our commitment there. You think we have an issue dealing with a resurgent Taliban now, just watch over the coming months if it seems we are going to abandon the ground there before a stable government and military are established.
The Afghans are not dummies. If they think we consider this effort a lost cause and are just looking for an exit, NO ONE there will stick around on that sinking ship and be left holding the bag as the head-choppers regain power.

This is a crossroads for the Afghan people and us.
