The iron rule of history is that all empires fall. They fall when they overextend militarily while ignoring domestic concerns.

The US has been in decline since the first OPEC oil embargo in 1973. Ever since then its’ decline has been accelerating. More and more wealth has gone to the wealthy as the middle class has completely collapsed. It’s only a matter of time before the inevitable breakup.

I had a dispute with my ultra-conservative sister recently. She’d tried to claim that FDR destroyed capitalism, but I think I was able to persuade her otherwise. Pointed out that during (and due to) the worldwide Great Depression, Europe went full-on genocidal fascist. Asia went full-on genocidal communist. The US remained a capitalist democracy, because the New Deal gave everyone a stake in keeping it that way. FDR and his “socialism-lite” is what held off the torches and pitchforks.
