Theory:

McConnell’s minions helped the rumors get to the WaPo reporter’s ears; a loss in AL would be 1) discrediting to the Bannon wing, and 2) less embarrassing to the party than if the stories came out after Moore was already in the Senate.

Problem with this theory is that if Doug Jones wins, that reduces the GOP majority to 51-49.
