When I was a kid, we came home and found the door scratched up and the carpet torn up at the front door by our dog, and some damage on the outside of the door. I think someone was trying to get in.

A few years later, that same dog would be the one that caught and killed the rats that had gotten into the house. We figured this out because, the second time we found one dead in the middle of the floor, when my dad tried to pick the body up with pliers, the dog saw it move, thought it was alive, and jumped at it again to make sure it was dead. He had crushed them enough to kill them, but never drew any blood.

Edit: The cats didn’t even consider it their job.
