I believe people are obligated to respond fully and truthfully in these settings, and if he simply says “I don’t know,” “I don’t remember,” a judge may decide to give him the maximum sentence available.

Plus he was indicted for a second reason: refusal to supply materials subpoenaed. So he can stonewall, or take the fifth, as far as testimony, but that doesn’t get him off the second indictment.
