A good friend of mine has owned English mastiffs for decades (including at least one that was a national champion.) His current beast is a gentle giant.

They really do not know how to be anything but gentle. They have no fight instinct. They were bred to chase and hold poachers, not harm. The King wanted that for himself. They will sneak up behind you silently and will just sit there until you notice them if you are trying to say, burgle a home they live in. Trust me, it is enough.
