In all that sclerotic stasis, the scene with the young Legionnaire on the motorcycle was brilliant - literally a breath of fresh air in that ceaseless tale of woe and ultimate salvation. I watched the whole film again, of course - and I'm glad you liked it.

There's some excellent wine up there. And in particular, a rare 'late harvest' grape that gives a sweet (but not cloying) golden liquor, Les Vendages Tardives.' The really good vintages are scarce, hard to find, and expensive. But worth it. If you like a good Sauternes, you'll appreciate their Alsatian cousins.

If you have Netflix, I highly recommend "Wire In the Blood". I use instant play more than any other type of viewing lately, both to my iPad and to the computer i have hooked to the big screen TV. And if you fall asleep, it is easy to replay the entire episode/movie or just set to the spot you want.

Pope deplores abuse raid on Belgium church HQ
(CNN) -- A raid at the headquarters of the Catholic Church in Belgium by police investigating child abuse was "deplorable," Pope Benedict XVI said Sunday.The pope expressed his "closeness and solidarity in this moment of sadness, in which, with certain surprising and deplorable methods, the searches were carried out" in a letter to the head of the Belgian Bishops Conference, Andre Joseph Leonard.
Police were searching for documents related to allegations of child abuse, a spokesman for the Brussels prosecutor said Thursday.
The Vatican said Friday it was shocked by the raids, alleging that two cardinals' tombs were violated in the raids in the town of Mechelen.
"We also express our regret at some of the infringement of confidentiality, that those victims on whose name the raid were conducted have the right to," the Vatican said in its statement Friday.
The Vatican also reaffirmed its "strong condemnation of any sinful and criminal abuse of minors by members of the Church" and cited "the need to repair and confront such acts in conformity with the law and teachings of the Gospel."
Police raided the headquarters of the Belgian Catholic Church and searched for important documents in relation to their
investigation into the abuse of children by church figures, prosecutor's spokesman Jean Marc Meilleur said on Thursday.
The Catholic Church faces allegations of child abuse by clergy across at least half a dozen countries, including the pope's native Germany, as well as Belgium, Ireland, Austria, the Netherlands and the United States.

This year will mark my parent's fifty first anniversary. They are from West Virginia. Senator Byrd has been there for as long as they've been married.
Dad says that it is fun to make fun of Senator Byrd for all of the treasure he's brought back to WV from the Federal Government. But without it? The state would have died.

I'm not one to complain about LGF at all. I realize it is a priviledge to post here and I am happy that although Charles and I disagree on some issues, he still allows me voice my opinion on his website. I must say, I was incredibly disappointed with the folks last night on the previous thread. I showed up mid conversation and they were making jokes about douches. I have nothing wrong with a a bit of friendly banter but Senator Robert Byrd had been taken to the hospital earlier in serious condition. I mentioned this and yet the thread never steered away from the douche motif for even a few posts for folks to voice their concerns for a man, who while many disagreed with him, was an icon in the US Senate. I guess I expected more. A man is near death and later died and all they could do was make jokes about douches.

This, basically. LGF'ers are by and large decent folks, it's just that sometimes we need to take our minds off the bad crazy that's going on out there. Unfortunately, sometimes that comes at the expense of paying respects to the honored dead.
On that topic, I was always in two minds about Senator Byrd. On one hand, he never ceased to annoy me because of how utterly dense he seemed to be - stubborn to the last. On the other hand, that stubbornness brought home the pork for his beloved West Virginia, whose people he served faithfully for as long as he was able. He will be missed.

"Common sense" might be a reasonable expectation at the moment (or not, depending on your view of HS employees) but what about when the six year old eventually becomes a 16 year old, 18 year old, 25 year old and so on? What's being touted as "common sense" now - the ridiculousness of accusing a six year old of terrorism - will eventually become a reason to deny her flight privileges when she's older.
The utterly opaque nature of such a list makes it suspect, and potentially alarming. There must be some public oversight, and some formal mechanism for challenge, or one day the situation is sure to move beyond the merely ridiculous to the point of abuse, or worse.

83 F and sunny already in lovely (and hazy) Philadelphia this morning.
And I'm back in the grind at work after a week's vacation visiting various pieces of New York State. The Hudson River Valley is lovely, and the Vanderbilt's knew how to spend money! And I can give a hearty recommendation to the Davidson Bros. brew-pub in Glens Falls, NY.
I'll say slightly less kind things about northern New Jersey. Weak map-fu and attempting some seat-of-the-pants navigation that generally works elsewhere got me enmeshed in Bergen County. (I know know another place besides northern Virginia where taking an exit off a 6-lane limited access highway will dump you *directly* into a housing sub-division.) Just bizarre.

From the article, Some militants view the UN as a symbol of the West and claim that the summer camps allow boys and girls to mix freely - something that the UN denies.
There were similar issues with trainees of the Baader-Meinhof Terrorist Gang hosted by the PLO. The following is from a movie review, but with some factual basis:
The hippy nature of the RAF’s leftism is brought out well. At one stage they all go off to the Lebanon to a terrorist training camp where they are told that men and women will be segregated. The RAF members can’t cope with this self-discipline and respond that ‘fucking and firing are the same thing’. The Palestinian guerrillas can’t handle the Westerners’ sexual liberation and when the German women insist on sunbathing naked in front of the terrorist trainees it proves to be too much for them.
So the Red Army Faction trainees were promptly invited to return to Germany.

I understand that sometimes nothing will break the thread and I forgive them. I know that they will pour out sentiment today, it just seemed a bit crass at the time. I'm over it but felt the need to vent just a bit.
We might not even have seen it.
I can't remember if I saw your post at the time. I might have a little later. I did see at least one page, maybe more, about Byrd's hospitalisation if not death last night sometime.
Anyway, I think many of us were just in a silly mood and running with the silly theme. I don't believe anyone meant to disrespect Byrd or deliberately disrespected him.
Also, I think many of us were just happy to be in a thread that long without any rancour or fighting, so once we were on that roll we kept going.
Apologies anyway from me for my part. Sometimes it's nice not to be serious though, if only for a little while.

They really do not know how to be anything but gentle. They have no fight instinct. They were bred to chase and hold poachers, not harm. The King wanted that for himself. They will sneak up behind you silently and will just sit there until you notice them if you are trying to say, burgle a home they live in. Trust me, it is enough.

My dear, you have never seen fog until you have been in a Chatham fog... a 1.5 hour ride to Logan airport took me 3 hours, one way. I stayed at Logan and slept in the car for a few hours until it broke. Got home at around 4am. Left the Cape at 8pm.
It was way too dangerous to drive at all, but, the client had to get there.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. NY still can't figure out its budget and the legislature paid lip service to Gov. Paterson's call for a special session yesterday by holding session for all of 3 minutes before going back to doing whatever it was that they were up to before being inconvenienced by the Governor - which is to say play games with the budget and come up with an asinine proposal that restores hundreds of millions of dollars in spending that the state simply doesn't have.
Meanwhile, NJ is a few steps closer to having its own budget in place by July 1 deadline, and Gov. Christie is getting pretty much everything he demanded in his budget. Christie appears on the way to bringing New Jersey some fiscal sanity, whereas New York's situation remains one of fiscal insanity.
New York continues acting as though they can keep on spending the way they have for decades on end, but tax revenues can't keep up with the spending so their budget proposals call for more business taxes, eliminating sales tax exemptions on clothes, cigarette tax hikes, and other fees. Even still, they can't close the $9 billion in deficit unless they engage in one-shot deficit spending (adding to the already insane state debt) or cutting spending significantly.
They have to hope for another bailout from the feds - which is how they managed to increase spending last year - they used billions in fed stimulus funds to actually increase state spending (last year's budget was an increase of over 5% from the prior year). Now, they're trying to close the budget deficit without the same level of federal funds.

Gas is cheaper in NJ too. You save at least 15-20 cents per gallon just going over into NJ from NY. Cigarette taxes are going to be cheaper in NJ too. But it's all relative because NJ taxes on cigarettes are pretty damned high, as are the sales tax on other items (7% state tax, 3.5% in enterprise zones). And property taxes are where the hurt really happens in NJ...

What I found funny about the people who always hammered Byrd about his KKK membership were always silent when Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms were brought up. I know they weren't KKK members as far as I know but their past was just as ugly and Byrd unlike those two apologized for this past behavior. Helms meanwhile I remember hearing bragged about whistling Dixie in the face of Carol Moseley Braun after she joined the Senate in the early 90's.

I posted this a while ago on the CNN boards because all the extreme right wing is out in force bashing him for having been in the KKK, some sixty years ago, when we all know what the Tea Partiers are acting like today. So I had this to say, which I thought I would share:
It is amazing to me how so many Republicans happen to proclaim belief in Redemption as part of their integral philosophy as Christians, and yet spit on anyone they disagree with simply to point out the flaws in the past, even when those flawed people did so much to try to redeem themselves.
Much as I disagreed with Sen. Byrd on many issues, most tremendously the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I still think that he did more than enough to try to redeem his previous horrible philosophies and membership in the Klan. He is somebody who completely changed his thinking and consistently made amends for those mistakes.
The fact that I, as an anti-theist, can accept that sort of attempt at redemption more than right-wing republican fanatics should speak volumes about the hypocrisy of their fundamental and "cherished" beliefs.

For those who are wondering: Bilski is a case that is fundamentally about the patentability of business processes simply because they use a machine or a transformation in them, the so-called "machine or transformation" test. This test has been the justification for many software patents, because software programs use a machine (a computer) and perform transformations on the electronic bits that store the data. While the decision didn't completely obliterate all software patents as invalid, it does deny that the machine or transformation test is the sole applicable test for patentability, which opens the door to legal challenges as to just what, exactly, IS patentable. This is a win for software innovation; the patent troll market has been strangling free development for many years now, and although I respect intellectual property and its immense value, patents just aren't logically applicable to software programs. Software falls under the jurisdiction of copyright, and it should stay there.

I'm a programmer, and a regular contributor to the open-source community. Intellectual property rights are a big deal to me, and I've been watching this case anxiously. It's not a massively favorable decision, because the Supremes didn't go so far as to rule on the question of what is or isn't patentable material in the Information Age (as they put it), but it at least leaves the door open.

I'm a programmer, and a regular contributor to the open-source community. Intellectual property rights are a big deal to me, and I've been watching this case anxiously. It's not a massively favorable decision, because the Supremes didn't go so far as to rule on the question of what is or isn't patentable material in the Information Age (as they put it), but it at least leaves the door open.
The furthest I got with programming scripting was with python. Anything else just...meh, headache.
Not sure why, though.

Well, even then, patenting the method of a software program is ludicrous on its face. A computer program is, at its essence, a mathematical equation. These equations are crafted to solve specific problems, and perhaps the new equation being developed is novel and unique, but that hardly makes it patentable. It is far too common that certain types of problems can only be solved using a limited set of equations, and if these are patented, how can anyone develop any program touching in that area without licensing or violating the patents? That may be a great thing for business application logic, but when it applies to fundamental concepts like network data transfer, it's just idiotic.

I don't think longevity of value is (should be) the issue. The trade-off is between rewarding the creators for their works by granting them exclusive rights and promoting the public good by time-limiting those exclusive rights. The US Constitution clearly says "for a limited time", not "until such time as the works are no longer of value".

I have the 2006 World Cup outfit and the shorts were white then.. Now they are black.. Guess I need to go on-line and order the black.

Then, a few years back there was a story about an Asian man in Pennsylvania who went postal on a bunch of women. Local papers are probably more likely to block a jerkface, both because they're more tech-savvy and because they have more of an interest in keeping their comments section clean and free of idiots. Their communities are often very small, and trolls would have an extremely detrimental effect that they would want to avoid.

No federal bailout for them - so they're confronting massive deficits that are even larger than they ought to have been had they started curbing spending last year to deal with massive shortfalls in revenues.
New York's situation is particularly egregious because they used the fed funds to prop up a budget that increased spending by 5% last year. Now, they don't have the state revenues to cover a budget that size, don't have the fed funds, and they can't raise broad based taxes because taxpayers are in a foul mood.
Oh, and they are refusing to curb spending in any significant and meaningful way because the politicos don't want to offend the unions.

I agree that the software should enjoy protection by copyright, in some way, so that the investment of resources and talent in creating it can be rewarded. There was no intent in copyright law that the "reward" period should be "until such time as the works are no longer of value", but that the public should subsequently benefit when that period is up. For software, however the value is gone long before that period is up.

There've always been jerks leaving their turds behind, but over the past few years it's gotten so ridiculous that I don't bother reading comments anymore on most sites. Ick.
I was reading somewhere recently that a lot of the online news organizations are trying to figure out new ways to handle comments. They want to allow people to interact by leaving feedback, but on high-traffic sites they simply aren't able to keep up with moderation due to the sheer volume of posts (most of them use a combination of bots + humans because it's the only economically feasible thing).

Morning everyone.
So over the weekend my city has been taken over by the military and the feds!
And it's great. The international Fleet Review is under way to celebrate the centennial of the Canadian Navy. I spent yesterday doing ship tours with my father, my best friend, and his father.
What a blast. The dads were just the 50 year old version of us. It was amazing to see two men getting along so well having just met. We viewed the USS Wasp, USS Barry, HMS Liverpool, HMS Sutherland and RFA Fort George.
Since this is a primarily American audience...
The marines aboard the Wasp were absolutely awesome. Some of the friendliest, scariest looking dudes I've ever met. One captain in particular talked to us for about half an hour, just shooting the shit about some of the inner workings of the Corps. If I knew how to contact his CO I would, just an awesome public face for the military. Choice quote, when talking about the number of sick beds and operating rooms: "Yes sir, that's correct, we do have 5 operating theaters aboard. Primarily because Marines will provide aid to wounded enemies."
Other guys were asking about what bars they should head to, that type of thing. Just really friendly, personable guys. Apparently this type of visit is used as a "thank you" for Marines who have done foreign tours, so I'm sure they were having as much fun playing as the kids were...
Not that I need to say it here, but Americans really have much to be proud of when it comes to their service men and women.
I really think that's going to be one of those days you always look back fondly on.
And now I'm sitting here, watching Government House waiting for the Queen to arrive. Very cool!

True that. My dad (WWII - South Pacific) said they were always the first to go in. They'd land on an island and go right in. Once everything was secure, they'd send up colored smoke bomb thingies so the rest of the troops would know where to go. I can't even begin imagine what it's like to have to be the first ones charging in, not knowing what in the heck you're going to encounter. *shudder*

Confidence is something you will never find lacking in any Marine contingent. Preparation and firepower are usually the hangups, although most Marines would tell you they'd jump out the airplane door without a parachute if they thought it would get the job done.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Susan Spicer, one of New Orleans' most prominent and highly regarded chefs, has sued BP Plc for damages to restaurants that have lost normal seafood supplies because of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Spicer, who runs the restaurant Bayona in New Orleans' French Quarter, is seeking class-action status on behalf of restaurants and others in the seafood industry that have suffered damage since the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig.

When 1st platoon 3/5th Marines raided this big warehouse a terrorist threw a grenade and one of Jordan's buddies got blown against the wall from the shock..But was uninjured from the blast.. The terrorist went running out the Building down the Street... Jordan's buddy went running down the street pissed as hell..Chased the guy down and killed him..

Have you ever seen Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations episode where they go to cover Lebanon just as the war with Israel breaks out? Instead of just hightailing it out of there, Bourdain - to his credit - told his crew to keep filming, but to turn the cameras around and document themselves.
After a couple of very harrowing days, they made it to a port where US Marines were conducting rescue operations. Bourdain, normally no friend of the government or the military, was practically gushing praise for those guys, and they were presented in a very positive light. Not at all hard to do, since they're professionals from start to finish. But it's funny how attitudes can radically change when it's your ass that's being pulled out of the fire.
Fantastic episode, by the way. It won an Emmy.

In Florida there was the same kind of doom-crying but when the gun rules were relaxed statewide nothing much happened. The murder rate went down but that might have been because it's been trending down anyhow.
Most people who would commit murder with a gun pay no attention to the laws against murder. And naturally, they pay no attention to laws against having a gun. They do, sometimes, pay attention to the risk/reward ratio. Home invasion burglary is going to become more risky.

For part of the exercise, we were supposed to deal with a near ambush with a wounded man. The Army would set down a base of fire and the fire team start working on the wounded. The Marines would yell "Corpsman" and launch an assault on the ambush site. Happened 4 different times without any of the Marines talking to each other before the exercise. The army though we were crazy.

One of my coworkers is telling someone in the office about her daughter's pre-school graduation. It's nice to encourage learning and all, but pre-school graduation? That's starting education!
It's a fun thing for the kids, and it gives the parents something to take pictures of.
I worked with a woman once whose kid was in a very involved elementary-school program. They were living in the projects, and a huge number of the neighborhood kids never made it out of high school, so part of the plan was to celebrate each academic milestone with great pomp and circumstance.
The kids wore teeny caps and gowns for kindergarten promotion. It was adorable.

I was reading somewhere recently that a lot of the online news organizations are trying to figure out new ways to handle comments. They want to allow people to interact by leaving feedback, but on high-traffic sites they simply aren't able to keep up with moderation due to the sheer volume of posts (most of them use a combination of bots + humans because it's the only economically feasible thing).

You're right. It has to be very difficult for a site like Yahoo to manage its users. For years, they simply cutoff the comments section, but then it came back online not too long ago, just as nasty as before.
They should make all comments go through moderation before they're posted. If you are a "good commenter" and have X amount of legitimate comments, then you should be allowed to post unmoderated. I mean, when you have 2000 posts, it's not like anyone can really follow it anyway.

Well, there was that time when we were getting new barracks furniture. We had a stack of about 300 matresses, so we started jumping off the second and third deck onto the pile. An officer came out and yelled, "Knock that off! Where is the platoon sergeant?"
"Third deck sir."
"GERONIMO!"
"Oh there he is now sir."
The mental picture painted by that one has me laughing in my cubicle.

For punishment, they made about 20 of us take the matresses to the dump, so they sent us with 300 matresses to dump them in a huge hole filled with hundreds of other matresses. We went sledding in May.

They keep getting into trouble cause they would end radio calls with Beach house instead of over..
They were warned but kept doing it...They ended up moving sand bags all day as punishment

The duty driver comes like a bat out of hell from around the corner, pulls a U-Turn in front of the gate and flies back onto base. We were laughing like hell for the rest of the night.

Who can read anything on there? His writing isn't particularly memorable or intriguing. Oh hey, maybe CNN should hire him after all!! (LOL)

I think we're in agreement. The copyright and patent periods have been extended by Congress to the point where nothing gets into the public domain until its worthless to the public interest. Just more evidence that both major parties are more interested in corporate interests than the public interest. The major parties play lip service to their respective ideologies insofar as it can garner them votes, but it is just lip service.
BTW, I've been contributing to (and getting paid to do it) to the open source community for the past 13-14 years. I'm no fan of sw patents but as long as they are out there, I do support efforts that some parties are taking to accumulate a defensive portfolio.

It's just particularly appalling given that Mandy was trying to create an outrageous outrage yesterday over a NONEXISTENT statement bashing 'all Southerners'.
Of course, earlier in the day she had called all Democrats 'blood sucking parasites'. Hypocrisy is never a problem for her. She likes it.
She would lose her mind (and does) if she even imagined someone made a statement like that about all of Christianity.
