See I would point to a major cultural change in the US:

The point where guns stopping being tools and started being symbols. The point where “self defense” began to expand into an existential concept as opposed to a practical one.

I wanted to skirt around the real issue, which is that guns became more important when beatings and lynchings no longer scared black people.
