The American UFO social frenzy, coming immediately on the heels of WWII, was, I believe, a mass reaction not only to WWII but the existence of a new kind of mass killing (nuclear war.)

It’s an interesting comparison to the Japanese concurrent fascination with monsters attacking and destroying Japan.
