re: #129 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

It’s funny, the liberal Christians I know have more stable and monogamous marriages than the conservative Christians I know. It’s almost like all of that sexual repression winds up biting them in the ass and they wander off the reservation to blow off all that kinky steam they’ve been storing up their whole lives.

And most surveys seem to indicate atheists have the most stable of marriages.

Correlation is not causation, but it would appear religious belief is not an indicator of a stable marriage.

re: #84 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

I still maintain that the fundamentalist right’s power base is predicated on fear, and that fear is driven by the politics of victimhood. If they aren’t victims, they aren’t afraid, and if they aren’t afraid, they start thinking for themselves.

Religion is based on fear. Conservatism is based on power (gaining and maintaining it). Thus, conservatism can use religious fear to gain and maintain power. This was the lesson of Paul Wyrich during Reagan’s first campaign against a real religious man, Carter.

Liberals do have a fear tool to drive people to the polls this time round: This election may be your last.
