It was always a compromise, from the start.
And that is why we end up sometimes being in compromised positions.
In the beginning, a popular vote was impractical, intractably so.
Today, though, it would be the easiest thing to implement, technologically.
But small states don’t want to feel diminished, so we’re back exactly where we started when Jefferson and his allies argued about these things.
