Folks should always leave on good terms in case there’s a need to rehire after a layoff. It happens.

Better:
Write a letter to the project leader (or whoever) saying how much you’ve enjoyed working with him and this group yada yada yada, then say you’re especially proud of project A that you worked so hard on, and include the documentation that it was your work. Just stay nice and cool and calm and collected.
