San Francisco has called for a boycott of Arizona

SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco city officials are calling for a boycott of Arizona and businesses based there to protest that state's strict new immigration law.

The city attorney, Dennis Herrera, offered on Monday to help with any challenges to the law. He says his teams will start determining which contracts between the city and county of San Francisco and Arizona could be severed without penalty.

Herrera does not know how many businesses this could affect.

Several city supervisors also promise to introduce a resolution calling for a citywide boycott of Arizona.

Freepers respond (classy as always!)

re: #14 Killgore Trout

I'm trying to make sense of this head long rush into madness that the very closed to any outside input right-wing machine (blogs + ClearChannel + Fox) seems to be aching for.

I can only surmise that they are feeling highly frustrated that they have failed to stop President Obama in his major agendas. First it was the Stimulus bill. Then it was Health Care. Now with financial reform polling very well with the public, it looks like Obama can score another victory before the 2010 elections.

Yesterday talking to an acquaintance who was spouting the usual RW talking points (over Democrats, the health bill, etc.) it felt so distant - here was a guy with little reason (as far as I could gather from what I know of his personal life), any reason, to pick up those memes - but he has. However, I noted that in general he has an axe to grind with about anyone. And therein lay a clue.

Ponder the thought that deep down we communicate with each other through mostly non-verbal means. Unhappiness is catching - we can affect those around us emotionally - positively and negatively. Also ponder that repetition is indeed an important learning method - simply repeating actions, or listening to the same thing over and over, creates deep inside our mind images that are connected to emotions.

I propose that the unbroken repetition of the themes of loss, victimhood, doom, and hate that has been building in the right wing machine over many years has crossed a threshold.

Now, because we are a very large and diverse nation I do not believe we will go the way of certain notorious nations in history, as some project. Yet I do think we are purging something out of our collective (heh...), and it is just something we have to go through. Not that we should encourage it, and we should confront hate wherever we find it, but still the changes are necessary.

I've been thinking about this more and more as I've been dealing with a few creationists lately. The change in mindset is so large that they psyche rejects it - too scary, too fearful. Dealing with reality is difficult for many of us, in the best of times.

The Dredge Report: Gleanings from the Fever Swamp

Last week, a couple of back-benchers in the Illinois asked the governor to send the National Guard to Chicago to help the cops. Paulian black helicopterists have now morphed this much-ignored request into this:

CHICAGO CALLS FOR MARTIAL LAW

with the inevitable Freeper hysteria not far behind:

"It’s a possible stepping stone for the same tactic on a far larger scale as we approach the November elections."

"I can see where this is going. As the weather warms, the locals attack the troops, the troops defend themselves, some locals get hurt. And then the Mesiah blames the troops and replaces them with his private army."

(Typical federal foot-dragging and incompetence. The hot season is only a few weeks away and Obama hasn't even started on getting his army trained and equipped. How can you run a dictatorship like that?)

"This is the 1st step. Chicago, Detroit, DC crime is no worse today than last year. Rats know what Nov will bring. The only way to stop the Conservative tsunami is martial law."

Reminds me of an apocryphal story I once heard about, I think, French King Louis 16th. Evidently he once held a competition offering a substantial prize to whoever could play him a recognisable tune on an unusual instrument.
The winner constructed a 'Pig Piano', with 'notes' ranging from squealer piglets through sows to the 'bass' boars. He won the prize with a rendition of 'Frere Jacques' recognisable by the King.

Any Lizard remember this from other sources that can correct my hazy recollection ?

re: #35 freetoken

You're right on with most of that, but I don't think it's so much that the conservative mindset feels angry and disenfranchised over the liberal turn America is taking or their political losses. I really don't think that most of them are that aware of what goes on in the political arena other than a sense of 'our side/their side'. Furthermore, I also don't think there's that much of a seismic difference in America as a whole over the time period they're observing.

For instance, one might make the argument that much of President Obama's policies are, in fact, centrist or slightly conservative. Certainly health care reform is far from what a true far lefty would envision. It's not even close to what a pragmatic liberal would envision. There haven't been a whole lot of changes in policy in 2009 from what it was in 2006. The American zeitgeist hasn't changed much. Yet there's a huge change in how Conservatives feel.

I think the reason is in fact much simpler, and much scarier, than many think. I think they are angry and unhappy because they're told to be. Not in so many words, but in the sense that their emotional state is entirely under the control of the media they follow. Not just talk radio and FOX, the prime pushers of the cult, but also in the blogs, and in associating with those of like mind, who of course are also plugged into the same Conservative cult media, thus reinforcing the mutual feeling through self-association.

The media model is simple enough. Humans naturally connect and follow with things they have a strong emotional response to. The actual emotion experienced is less important, just that there is an emotional response. Talk radio, and FOX in the last decade, have turned exploiting this into an art form. Their listeners and viewers are subjected to a constant barrage of themes, ideas, and memes with the goal of evoking an emotional response, which will then cause them to seek out the media time and again, to continue to pull on the emotional strings.

Unfortunately, the easiest emotion to evoke is anger. Making your followers angry at 'them' is so easy, and much more consistent than making them feel pride, or love, or any other kind of emotion. And so those who get plugged into this media, into this cult, continue to do so, to reinforce their emotional responses with daily input.

I've said before that I used to listen to Conservative talk radio 8 hours a day for a few years in my workplace. It wasn't my choice, but as an open-minded type and one interested in how politics works, I didn't mind so much. And the biggest difference I found was that I was consistently angry. It didn't make a lot of sense, because I didn't agree especially with what I was hearing, nor did I feel especial anger towards the radio hosts as some might. I was just - angry. I talked to others who left that workplace, including the guy I replaced, and they noted that the biggest difference in being removed from the constant talk radio was how much less angry they were. I have noted personally (without any stats to back it up other than personal observation) that those who are plugged into the Conservative media, and who seek out that viewpoint on the internet, by and large seem to be either continually angry, or easily angered. Of course, there are angry liberals too, and people who are just naturally angry. But it certainly seems to me to be a recurring theme.

In short, I don't think it's so much that the constant banging on the drum is building to a head. I think it's just a constant reinforcement of emotional responses evoked by clever marketing and headology. Remove these people from their never-ending barrage of emotional manipulation, and I suspect that most will deprogram in very short order. Unfortunately, we humans love to have our emotions manipulated. We thrive on it. And so, sadly, those plugged into the Conservative cult media will continue to seek it out, like junkies after their next fix.

Because their locked into a version of "conservatism" that doesn't work. They're never going to get Roe v Wade overturned, creationism is never going to be taught in public schools, "family values" candidates are going to keep getting busted having gay sex, their concept of "smaller government" is a fantasy, etc. Contraception, sex education and abortion is going to remain legal. There's never going to be a Constitutional ban on gay marriage. Etc...
They're getting near the end of their rope and it scares the hell out of them.

I guess, but all that happened on Bush's watch too, and they seemed OK. I guess they had the wars to be emotionally invested in, but those are continuing. I realize I don't get it.

re: #72 SanFranciscoZionist

I guess I find it amazing that we still have such a considerable group that can't handle that.

Of course, I still find it sort of amazing that we elected him in the first place, so I suppose I can't quite make my mind up about the exact extent of ingrained racism in the U.S.

The US is not that racist. It really isn't. It is a testament to how marvelous this place is that less than 8 years after a terror attack, perpetrated by brown people with funny names that shook this nation to its very core, that same nation turned around and elected as President... a brown person with a funny name. No nation on earth save a First World Western nation could do that, and I'm pretty sure most of them still wouldn't.

Those feeling the conservative anger aren't, I think, bemoaning their failed policies or the like. Like I said, I don't think they are especially invested in policies as a whole, except maybe one or two hot-button issues that vary from person to person. I think they're upset and angry solely because those are the emotions that are manipulated in them daily by the media they follow and the people they associate with, who follow the same media.

re: #90 Spare O'Lake

It's about trends, and the trends are against the hardcore conservative movement.

More and more people are taking the (for simplicity) 'left' position on abortion and gay marriage, and fewer are taking the 'right' position.

Its only a matter of time, and the time is coming up quicker than anyone would have thought.

Thus the anger and series of Hail mary plays from those groups.

I am comparing the US to other nations. Western nations are by far the least racist there are. The US may have some deeply racist elements, and it may look terrible to some, but believe me, it's nothing by comparison. I'm not even talking about ghastly obvious examples like apartheid. I'm talking about everyday, institutionalised racism, like how America must have been when blacks weren't allowed to own property or the like.

I talked to others who left that workplace, including the guy I replaced, and they noted that the biggest difference in being removed from the constant talk radio was how much less angry they were.

Yes, exactly. That is partly what I meant about our ability to affect the emotions of those around us.

The advertising industry has become so specialized in their ability to manipulate people via emotions and self-identity - the promotion of the self, that it is hard to see how we can escape it.

The need to compete - to be the alpha male, goes along with this anger. Did you catch the survey a few weeks ago, about the sports interests of Americans compared to political identity? Telling it was.

Basically, he said that EA is a big whore (which is true, but trite) and that everyone who continued to work for them was a big fucking whore too and deserved to be treated badly by them, since EA was a pimp (kinda contradictory). Also, he'd been developing his own game and we'd all weep at the beauty of it when we saw it. Also, he accused me specifically of harassing him by making him do work and stuff and cutting short his time spent developing that game.

I didn't really make him do any work, because he was so shitty at doing it. I basically just yelled at him to at least look busy every once in awhile.

Tell me about Institutionalized racism in Germany, France, Japan, S.Korea, or whatever.

All nations have racism sure, but seroiusly. The problem in the US is bad, and we have to come to terms with it. The good news is that the Obama election is making that happen.

In most of Africa, tribes and ethnicities kill each other based on nothing but race. In Sri Lanka, civil war has raged for 25 years based on nothing but race. In China, a contestant on Chinese Idol who was not full blood Han sparked a huge national controversy over the purported superiority of the Han race, and the internet comments made Hot Air look like a cuddly lefty blog. In China, police state policies over immigrants are far worse than anything Arizona could dream up, and have been that way for years. In most of SE Asia, nobody would think twice about not hiring someone based on nothing but race. My own parents left the country of their birth because a law was passed that made it very difficult for those of their race to own property.

In any Western nation, including here, any of those policies would be political death at best, and grounds for revolution at worst. The attitudes about race that most of the rest of the world holds would never, ever, be socially acceptable here. That doesn't mean racists don't exist, but Western nations are by far the least racist around.

Breaking news:

The U.S. extradited former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega to France on Monday, clearing the way for him to stand trial there on money laundering charges.

The former strongman, who was being held in a federal prison in Miami, was on an Air France flight to Paris, according to a Department of Justice source who spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to comment on the case.

My best employees at that time were:

1. A totally clean-cut Korean kid who made a lot of money under the table by buying and reselling games from the EA Store.

2. A very openly bisexual goth dude

3. A complete animal of an Jewish punk riot kid who drank like a fish, showed up to work late and hung over, but could organize a database like it was his collection of shot glasses.

Between them, they did about 50% of the real work.

That was when I learned to ask better questions about military experience. I had one guy that had been in the military for 8 years and come out as an E-3. I hadn't realized that meant there was something seriously wrong with his brain.

True enough but it is odd that in the spirit of diversity, our children are constantly taught how wonderful every other culture around the globe is and the diversity lessons always seem to leave out the part about the rampant racism in some of those other cultures. I have seen my kids bring home all sorts of pro-diversity stuff from school over the years and I don't recall ever even once there being even a cursory mentioning of anything bad about the other cultures, other than perhaps that American culture is invading the others. A typical American student must get the impression that racism is only alive and well right here in the USA.

Because really, there's absolutely no reason at all to be concerned about mine safety:

Mining lobbyist: ‘The president has parked his tanks on our front lawn’

This weekend, as President Barack Obama traveled to West Virginia to mourn the deaths of 29 miners in the Massey coal explosion, the mining industry attacked the president with militant right-wing rhetoric. Obama has supported the U.S. coal industry with an agenda of investing “huge subsidies” in the advanced coal technology that he misleadingly calls “clean coal.” His administration has begun to crack down on the industry’s worst safety violators and most egregious practices like mountaintop removal, but has also announced that any limits on carbon pollution would not begin until 2011. The day before Obama praised coal as “the energy that powers our country and powers the world,” National Mining Association spokesman Luke Popovich attacked the president as a military invader of coal country:

You’d be hard pressed to find a president whose actions have been more warlike on coal. There are those who say the president has parked his tanks on our front lawn, and it’s hard to dispute that.

The National Mining Association — whose directors include Massey Energy’s Don Blankenship — joins a right-wing chorus accusing Obama of “invading” and declaring “war” on Americans, including Newt Gingrich, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH), and CNN commentator Erick Erickson. (HT Appalachian Voices)

They said an average case lasts 3 to 6 months. I got rid of it in three weeks. I looked at my copy of Gray's Anatomy, saw where the 7th cranial nerve goes, and I iced it behind my ear, and I took Ibuprofen. I figured that's what you do for inflammation, and it seemed to work.

I realize the economy sucks. Other than that, what's really changed a whole hell of a lot? Why are they feeling so devoid of comfort?

While I definitely believe some people dislike President Obama because he is (half) Black, I suspect that many others dislike him because he is a symbol of the changing face & evolving culture of America.

I think that right up until 11pm on November 4, 2008 a lot of people were able to convince themselves that things hadn't really been changing over the years. Then Obama won. and won by a large margin. And suddenly there was no more denying it—change had arrived, it became real, undeniable.

I think some people want to put the genie back in the bottle, and they know in their heart of hearts that it's not going to happen. And that makes them feel afraid, and the fear makes them resentful, and the resentment makes them angry, and it's ALL OBAMA'S FAULT. Because if he hadn't come along with all his hopey-changey stuff and had the temerity to actually be elected as President, then they wouldn't have had the comforting veil denial ripped away from them.

I can't decide if this is insane, hilarious, or ballsy:

California woman charged with moving into, claiming Lolo home she didn't own

A California woman is charged with burglary after prosecutors say she moved into a Lolo house that was for sale, changed the locks and delivered paperwork to the owner claiming it was hers.

Jackiya D. Ford, 37, was arrested on April 14 and her belongings removed from a house built by Bob Paffhausen. She made an initial appearance in Justice Court on April 19 and her bail was set at $50,000.

Paffhausen said Ford had showed up about two weeks earlier to view the house as a prospective buyer. Sometime after that, prosecutors say Ford delivered paperwork to Paffhausen claiming ownership of the house and the land in a 20-mile radius around it. She offered to drop the lawsuit if Paffhausen would pay her about $900,000 in pure silver and gold.

Paffhausen received a call from NorthWestern Energy saying someone had reported a natural gas leak at the house. Paffhausen went to the house, where he found the locks and garage door codes had been changed and notices were posted on the doors claiming the house had been given to Ford by "our Lord and Savior Yahushua."

Looking through a kitchen window, he could see personal belongings, including a rifle case leaning against the living room wall.

Paffhausen called County Attorney Dori Brownlow, with whom he had been working on Ford's alleged claim to the house, and then 911.

Missoula County deputies shut off the gas and electricity to the house and were discussing how to enter the house when Ford drove up. Officers arrested her before she got out of the SUV.

Ford told the officers she was a sovereign citizen of the republic of America and therefore they had no authority over her. She said she owned the whole mountainside and that they were on public property. She said she had lived in the house for about two weeks, court records said.

Ford had a child with her and court records say the child was turned over to child protective services.

Maybe, but isn't the Republican party all about change now? The teabaggers want to change government, as in less government. Arizona Republicans want to change the 4th Amendment (in essence). Others want to change separation of church and state and teach creationism alongside evolution. The right wants change alright, but changes in the wrong direction.

Obama campaigned on 4 major issues healthcare, economy, education and energy. These are the things he wanted to change. The economy is the most difficult because not all of that is in government control. Healthcare he got passed (good or bad). He's made some moves in education, giving grants and credits for community service. Energy will be the next big hurdle.

These are changes all of us should be willing to get behind. Not re-writing the constitution (like they claim the left the is doing).

Ticket prices are dropping for the Friday night gala that features a VIP gathering and speech by former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.
Instead of $1,000, attendees can now pay $250 for one ticket to the 7 p.m. dinner Friday where the former Alaska governor will speak at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas. Tickets for two to the VIP reception and dinner, once priced at $25,000, now cost $2,000 (and now include six non-VIP dinner tickets and a photo with Palin). Ticket sales end at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Organizers say "ticket sales have been reduced to offer a greater number of people an opportunity to attend." Organizers also say funds raised will benefit a new kind of women's health center, the Uptown Women’s Center.

Also, her demands for pure gold and silver and claims of sovereign citizenship made me laugh. What are the odds she listens to Glenn Beck and Alex Jones?

re: #287 marjoriemoon

I guess now it's all about change/counter-change. Or something. The whole thing is really weird to me. I mean, America is still here. No black helicopters have landed, no political prisoners have been arrested and carted away to FEMA internment camps, no children have been forced to attend re-education programs, POTUS hasn't declared that God is dead (commie) or instituted shariah (seekret Kenyan Moosilim). So....? I don't get what all the drama & panic is about. It just doesn't compute.

I was referring to several groups of people who don't have (IMO) good ideas of change. Teabaggers are one of those people. Although I do believe there are places where government regulation is not terribly effective (war on drugs comes to mind) and other areas where we could use more help.

In 2004, John Kerry was called "the most liberal Senator"...so of course that label was passed on to Barack Obama in 2008...only it didn't work this time. America is seeing how inaccurate that claim is, and I think this will be reflected in November, when the great political shift doesn't happen as big as it's predicted (regardless of how much the 'liberal media' tries to make it happen).

I know moderate (read calm, rational) Republicans are out there, but their voices aren't getting heard, or maybe they're just getting shouted down. I had my own irritation. Got downtown on my way to an interview, got on the Blue Line with enough time to get to the Forest Park end of the line and catch a bus. The CTA had trains on both tracks at Forest Park, forcing the train I was on to wait for one of them to clear. Result: I got to watch the bus I needed pull out of the station without me and then had to pay $25 dollars for a cab to make my interview. But I aced the interview. Not sure yet about the position. It's not what I'd ideally like, but unlike that offer last month the owner was very honest and upfront. That leads me to be better disposed towards him and his company.

I reject the premise. 1.) Plenty of flouncers made noise about how important the community was to them. 2.) Plenty of people with views the popularity of which has swung wildly are still here without regard to the importance of the community.

I'm going to leave the awkward wording of 2.) because it seems appropriate.

I think it's a good thing. I can't decide if this is insane, hilarious, or ballsy:

California woman charged with moving into, claiming Lolo home she didn't own

Story from about ten years ago in the San Francisco papers: a woman was living in an apartment in San Francisco that had hookups for a gas stove, but no stove. She apparently drove out to some empty military housing on Treasure Island, broke into one of the houses under cover of darkness and removed the stove from the unit, then drove back to the City with it.

She neglected to turn off the gas feed, however. Gas continued to build up in the house until some time in the early morning, when the heating system clicked on, and there was an earth-shattering KABOOM. Or at least a KABOOM loud enough that an MP drove down the hill to see what the hell that was.

The firemen were called, and the house was put out without too much damage.

The lady who took the stove was tracked to her home in SF. She'd installed the stove. Incorrectly. They apparently got to her not too long before her home would also have gone KABOOM.

Thought experiment: if the victim was a 21 year old blond, would rape be in quotes?

Another thought experiment: if this were being aired on MSNBC, would you still be upset about the quotes?

Of course. The allegation against her father though is what is still not clear.

Yes.

But that is a most unlikely scenario.

As is the use of quotes in my hypothetical.

[Link: voices.washingtonpost.com...]

We've chewed it over, and most people seem to feel it was nothing much. I'm mildly offended by it, simply because it makes no sense in context, and I'm sick of dumbass Jewish jokes in general.

I think the issue is about the who did it, not the act.

For example, if it really was the 12 year old next door, while it is rape, it's also a whole other can of worms.

I have a nearly 5 year-old rig. Had to replace the motherboard last year, too. Gave me an excuse to get a new case, though. No, this is good ole XP I'm using right here.

XP is a good OS for old rigs...I can't say much..But our Company is having an issue with Microsoft..The upgrade path from XP to Windows 7 is all fucked up..
There is a war going on in the background..And our CIO is leading the charge.
It is going down..But I can't say much yet...

Come on... is that the best you can do... hit me with your best jewish merchant joke...

Since you seem to be interested in this "joke" that NSA adviser James Jones blurted out I thought I would try and search for some origins of the joke.

I was able to locate one back to Mr. Bagel Funnies dated June 24, 2007 at Mr. Bagel Funnies. He was the winner of "Jewish & Israeli Blog Awards ~ 2007 Best of the Rest."

He hat tips a website called Jewlarious and the there you can find the same joke which was submitted by Moshe Miller. Jewlarious is part of Aish International ("Aish HaTorah, founded in Jerusalem by Rabbi Noah Weinberg in 1974, is dedicated to revitalizing the Jewish people by providing opportunities for Jews of all backgrounds to discover their heritage in an atmosphere of open inquiry and mutual respect.")

The joke also made the round at some Christian and gun forums. The joke originally used al Qaeda in place of Taliban.

Naw, it isn't that the "majority" voted for him, how could the majority possibly vote for a Kenyan, Muslim, Ni**er? They know, just know deep down in their tiny cold hearts, that really it was just because of massive and widespread multi-state voter fraud by ACORN!

/yeah, that has to be it!

(your taking about freepers and their kin here, actual facts mean nothing...sigh)

The idea that he was actually voted in by a majority of voters appears to be a hard one for some of these guys to tackle. I can sort of understand that. I do recall, in 2004, saying, 'who ARE these people?', meaning those who had reelected Bush, so I can see how it's sometimes hard to envision the 'other' voters. But still, there seems to be very little understanding among the crazier folks that lazy greedy leftist extremists alone cannot put a president into office.

Fine, but the article headline has nothing whatsoever to do with the stepfather's presumption of innocence. The way they did it, putting rape in quotes, casts baseless doubt on the principle that an eleven year old pregnant girl cannot possibly give consent. It just seems like such a strange thing to do.

Need some evolution and global warming threads, maybe something on the Confederacy, to get thing riled up.

We haven't had an evolution thread in AGES. I liked them. Unlike the AGW threads, I can mostly understand the science involved, at least in a sort of general way.

re: #317 CuriousLurker

I guess now it's all about change/counter-change. Or something. The whole thing is really weird to me. I mean, America is still here. No black helicopters have landed, no political prisoners have been arrested and carted away to FEMA internment camps, no children have been forced to attend re-education programs, POTUS hasn't declared that God is dead (commie) or instituted shariah (seekret Kenyan Moosilim). So...? I don't get what all the drama & panic is about. It just doesn't compute.

Well, for one thing, I think the crazier people out there believe that horrible stuff IS happening, and that worse stuff will happen any minute. Some of them also believe that only their vehement protests are STOPPING stuff from happening.

I'm thinking of the amazing Cynthia McKinney spiel about the 5,000 prisoners Bush murdered. This didn't happen, by any reasonable standard of proof, and also, in fact. But I'm sure there are people out there who believe it still, and would find me quite naive for not believing it.

And so it goes.

True. In this case, I'm going to assume it was a minor lapse in judgment .

I was referring to several groups of people who don't have (IMO) good ideas of change. Teabaggers are one of those people. Although I do believe there are places where government regulation is not terribly effective (war on drugs comes to mind) and other areas where we could use more help.

I'm a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. Personally, I hate getting lumped in with creationists theocrats, or gay-bashers, or anti-immigrant race-baiters, or anti-Israel conspiracy-theorists. I'm right with you on the prohibition of drugs. On the other hand, I'm probably not with you on some other things, and if I didn't bother to qualify myself otherwise, I'd probably get lumped into your teabag category.

Why is Fox News putting the word rape in quotes?

Possibly because the rapist hasn't been convicted, but given that she's eleven, I'm sayin', go for it. It's not like they're all that into the frickin' legal niceties anyway.

418 SanFranciscoZionist  Mon, Apr 26, 2010 5:43:54pm

Because it hasn't been ascertained that she has been raped. Her claim has yet to be proved in a court of law.

There is such a word as 'alleged' in English. The quotes are distinctly hostile.
