re: #135 The Ghost of a Flea

Some background: Angola is 95% Christian, mostly Catholic and evangelical. Islam…there’s maybe a few hundred thousand Muslims in a nation of 14-16 millions. The former are mostly immigrants from West Africa. You don’t get very far in looking for stuff on the Islam ban before you hit the bad crazy of Gellar-like proportions, intermingled with Christian nationalist sentiments.

The reasoning being given for the ban is a fear of Wahhabism, but there’s a lot of textured stuff going on. Muslims are associated with illegal immigration, there’s unverified reports of “Muslims mobs” attacking Christians, There’s also the question of whether this ban fits into a larger picture of Angola as a nation in an ongoing internal conflict…I don’t know the situation well enough to speculate intelligently, but the nation has just had a shakeup to its political process, so power is even more concentrated with one party.

No-one’s going to ban Christianity…and that’s exactly why Fischer is excited.

Not that would, but they could. And an overweening government wouldn’t have to ban Christianity to make life miserable for believing Christians who disagree with it, or who land it decided to take to give to some Chinese mining company.

Twitter does not allow for such distinctions, though. My post was right near its limit as it was.
