I’ve mentioned several times (other sites, folks, this is only my second here) that the GOP appears to be going through a zealotry crisis. A lot of long-lived organizations do. Put simply, the zealots gain enough power that they try to enforce the One True Way, they lose a battle or other engagement, and then decide they Were Not True Enough. At that point a positive feedback loop begins. They kick out fellow travelers who are no longer considered True and try again. If they lose again, repeat.

The most typical end result is the destruction of the organization as it was. Something that bears the same name and has many of the same people may survive but how it’s treated by outsiders and what its internal rules look like are completely different. Sometimes the organization (or nation or religion or, well, etc.) is completely destroyed. Least common but once in a while something happens to break the feedback loop.

I don’t know what’s going to happen to the GOP at the national level. I know it won’t be pretty. It’ll unbalance things for years - maybe decades - even if they pull it out now. My personal guess is that we have at least three 2-year electoral cycles for the GOP to pull out or go into collapse mode - and that it’s too late for ’ your father’s GOP’ to come back.
