re: #138 Shiplord Kirel
Back about 1990, a column in the weekly Parade magazine (an insert in our Sunday paper) contrasted the prosperity and stability of Japan and Germany with the alleged chaos in the United States since the war. It concluded by declaring “the lesson of history is undeniable: Defeat in war invariably benefits the losers more than the winners.”
I immediately fired off a letter to the editor pointing out just how little the civilized world would have benefited from an Axis victory in World War 2. I called the statement “scandalous,” “depraved,”and “moronic.” The editor (who has no control over the insert’s content) called me to express his agreement. He published the letter unaltered.
True enough but I think loosing to a generous civilized country can better then winning a war at times.
Isn’t that what “The mouse that roared” is all about?
