re: #133 HappyWarrior

I saw a lot of confederate flags when I was near Gettysburg and Antietam when I went to those battlefield sites. I thought that was interesting considering that the forefathers of those people were diehard unionists. THe coolest Gettysburg story I know is of an old, 70 year old veteran of the war of 1812 who got his musket and joined the fighting.

Apparently the woman whose daughter established Mother’s Day was an activist who worked to bring people from different sides together after the Civil War and work toward peace and forgiveness. Veterans, parents of the dead. It was a really hard time in so many ways.

I’m researching a piece of historical fiction I want to write now that’s set in the mid/late 1870s, and I’m constantly having to remind myself how much the war must still have hung over the country, and affected individual’s lives.
