re: #115 Cato the Elder

Fixed that for you.

Unfortunately, most of what we produce is ugly.

And really? Sculpture, painting, music, more than the rest of the world combined? How much culture from the rest of the world do you actually follow?

I’m not even going to try and take this any further. My condolences if all you see is the ugly or the mediocre in American cultural production. Being geographically separated from for the last four decades has sharpened my perceptions of what actually is and the perception of the same by certain ill-informed or prejudiced observers. Personally, I wouldn’t care if it was Albania or Swaziland rather than the U.S. I don’t receive any royalties or residuals in any case. But since what you term ‘culture’ has become something vital in my life, I’m quite attentive to both its quality and where it’s coming from. Once again, the U.S. wins, hands-down.

But if all you want to admit is the ugly, remember that it’s a choice rather than an inevitable condition.
