Quite frankly, the GOP deserves that fate. The party is desperately broken and corrupt and needs an enema.

The best thing for the GOP would be a Mondale-style humiliation on the national stage. Maybe then the party leadership could finally tell the wingnuts and religious bigots to STFU and go to the Constitution Party where they belong, and get rid of the Paulian idiots, too. The Republicans are completely off the rails and desperately need to houseclean.

The problem has long been that without social conservative voters Republicans cannot form a majority coalition. Paulians can be run off, but others cannot be gotten rid of. In any scenario where that was tried, you’d end up with a hodge-podge of party fragments unable to win anything. I know some people here would like such an outcome, but I wouldn’t.

But a Mondale situation is not going to happen. The more relevant parallel is what happened to the Democrats in 1860.
