If it anything, it demonstrates that we as a society take more issue with discharging a firearm with the intent to avoid a fatality than it does actually killing a person.

Because in spite of what one’s intentions are, discharging a firearm is inherently dangerous. Even at the range, with all safety precautions in place you need to keep your head in the game. In an occupied home in an occupied neighborhood your intent pretty much has to be lethal in order for it not to be reckless.
