It seems to me that they find out an awful lot after crashes, even when there’s been a lot of damage, but I don’t know how far that goes?

Like Reine said, it’s a matter of tracking down all the pieces, fitting them back together, and seeing what you come up with. So many factors here, from the age of the plane to the the pilot to the crash, that it could be years before we have a definitive answer.
