My mother tells a story about when she was stationed at NAS Norfolk, and several people in her division in a row alphabetically had Polish names. When roll was called, it would be āskiā āskiā āskiā &c. They learned which āskiā they were to answer to muster.
Way Iād do it would be the first letter of the surname. So say the personās name was Kowalski, Iād call them K-ski. My grandmotherās maiden name ends in cik but itās pronounced chik in the old country and by our New York/New Jersey cousins as it does in our ancestral language.
