I think the Kerry campaign naively expected a honest fight. But you’re right the Bush campaign knew how to get to the churches. The whole Bush is a Good, Christian man and implying that Kerry was not by extension. Plus Rove was masterful. They got all those anti-gay marriage referendums on the ballots of key states in a way to drive out the evangelical vote.

I wrote a paper on GOP style “grass roots” organization as it applies to schools. (hint: It doesn’t exist. All those ads you would see from groups you never heard of before like “Americans for Better Education” or whatever would always lead to a PO Box and the funding would always come from an astroturf outfit headed up by Betsy DeVos…wife of an Amway shill and sister to Eric Prince…founder of Mercenary outfit Blackwater)
