re: #144 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge
Every suggestion of establishing an English Academy has gone nowhere. Our source of authority are the pundits of the “Augustan Age”, roughly the first half of the 18th century—Dr. Johnson and so on. Their main failing was trying to trim English to fit the Procrustean Bed of Latin grammar. Don’t split that infinitive!
The fight over “c” vs “z” and whether it’s “zee” or “zed” would be interesting.
