During the “Satanic Panic” of the 80s, there were several traveling church groups and ministers who would go around to the types of places where people are more likely to be receptive to their nonsense and give “seminars” to local law enforcement and Concerned Parents Groups on how to recognize evidence of satanic cults and how to identify their members (spoiler: always teenagers / young adults, and anything that vaguely resembled a heavy metal-oriented poster in their room was a sure sign that they were secretly part of an infanticidal Satanic cannibal sex cult).

Several of those idiots came through town, including my absolute favorites: Revs. Dan and Steve Peters. They had a few books they were hawking, one of which was “Why Knock Rock?” It purported to explain how almost every musical artist from the 50s onward was deeply involved in serious heavy-duty occult activity. If you can think of a recording artist, they had A Serious Problem with him/her/them. If you ever happen to find a copy of that book at a flea market or something, pick it up. It’s a hoot, although it seriously infuriated me at the time. People ate it up.
