For my part, I’d rather have the time off than a pool in the backyard, but Americans seem more than willing to work their asses off for assets than end up costing them a lot of money over decades. Slaves to the job, the house, the cars, the pool.

If anything, it has gotten worse.
On the other hand, most Europeans cannot afford the luxury of having a house with a pool in the backyard, and most of Europe is too crowded to have accessible recreation areas for a weekend getaway: they need time to travel.
Gawd, I really must have a European mindset. : )
Unfortunately, some outside the US are envious of the “stuff” they see promoted here (which most people I know could never afford) and want the same shit.
If I were on my own, I’d live in the smallest place I could find, as long as there was green all around. If my grandson ever gets into a relationship and leaves, if the 1 BR opens up here, the only one, I will opt for that. Right now, I can open up my door, walk a few steps and be in a woodland area with a brook.
