There are a couple additional big differences between health insurance and other types of insurance: 1. The variability of costs is much greater; it’s not the frequency of use but the fact that the costs associated with serious health problems are so great that you may need 10,000 healthy consumers to support the one consumer with major needs.
2. The health needs of an individual are independent of their wealth. Most insurance is correlated with income — more expensive homes, life insurance etc. This is the one insurance that has little to do with wealth; in fact, the need is inversely related to wealth.
