I used cold-cocked to mean a surprise attack; apparently many people think it means knocked unconscious. This could be regional, or even international differences in usage. I am fluent in English and American, and have dabbled in Australian; I understand them all but sometimes the wrong one comes out when I speak.
Having Montanan friends (whom I have visited in their native habitat) I would think that not giving someone a chance to put their dukes up would compound the offense.
