Certainly seems like there should be a happy medium between trying to reduce the hundreds of thousands of annual deaths from these drugs (much more than all illegal drugs combined) and making sure people with a legitimate need for these drugs can still get them.

No such thing as a “happy medium” where official (State and/or Federal) regulation of pharmaceuticals is concerned; just more Drug War Theater to justify increasing budgets. Sadly, Mrs. Jay C is a chronic-pain patient (with a certifiable 17-year history of such), and obtaining a steady supply of the Scheduled medications she needs becomes a ever-more-irksome chore with each passing year. Despite the increasing number of hoops we have to jump through, I can’t see where most (if ANY) of the restrictions are likely to reduce the quantity of prescription meds available for illicit sale and/or abuse - though if inconvenience for legitimate users is an intended effect, then they’re working like a charm.
