Exactly. Nobody knows how they will react in an extreme situation without having been in one. This is why police and the military train so much, in hopes that the training will override the natural reaction, and STILL often it doesn’t, when the real situation arises.

And the person who did confront the shooter was a veteran - in other words, far more often than not, the “good guys” (armed or not) who confront the bad guys have exactly the kind of training you’re talking about.
