all they had to say was ‘no. you’re not a member of the party. you don’t get to play one now’

I suspect some of the calculus that went into that decision was the realization that if they didn’t let him run, he’d run on the Green Party line, and potentially pull votes from Clinton in the general. That had to be a real concern when you’re considering a Clinton vs Bush or Rubio or Cruz or Kaisich or Anyone Not Named Trump general election in 2016.
