The Mercator projection is a geographical lie. (Note that the superimposed dots represent areas of equal size.)

It makes Africa and South America look insignificant in relation to their real proportions. In actual fact, Brazil alone is nearly as big as the continental United States.

A sinusoidal projection comes much closer to the reality.
