27 | Thoughtful Thu, May 7, 2009 1:09:44pm |
Cool map.
Try this for photographing documents:
1) Ideally shoot in an all-black room.
2) Use large 3M polarizing filters over the light source -- two sources 45 degrees off to either side work well. Be sure the polarizers are aligned the same.
3) Use a polarizing filter on the camera as well.
This set up pretty nearly eliminates the bits of glare off the document folds.

Bindings reveal much about antiquarian books. Leather bindings came to prominence in the 1750's or so. Before that it was primarily vellum and other animal hides.
For more information about antiquarian books check the ABAA or surf through Ebay who makes a large market in them.
Some of the oldest materials are the hand-written, illuminated manuscripts and they are extremely beautiful and valuable. Early books made on a printing press are called incunabula and were printed before 1501.

I hate to tell you this Charles, but I think you got rooked. (In a bazaar in Turkey? No way!) The book & writing may be from the 18th-Century, but the map is likely contemporary. I see things like this a lot in my line of work, people paint old-looking miniatures over old manuscripts which have nothing to do with the paintings. They're meant to separate tourists from their money.

The Piri Reis map is a famous pre-modern world map compiled in 1513 from military intelligence by the Ottoman-Turkish admiral and cartographer Piri Reis. The half of the map which survives shows the western coasts of Europe and North Africa and the coast of Brazil with reasonable accuracy. Various Atlantic islands including the Azores and Canary Islands are depicted, as is the mythical island of Antillia and possibly Japan. The map has been used in pseudo-scholarship to claim an ancient knowledge of an ice-free Antarctica, transmitted either from extra-terrestrials or an Ice Age civilization, but the region in question better fits Patagonia. The historical importance of the map lies in its demonstration of the extent of Portuguese exploration of the New World by approximately 1510, and in its claim to have used Columbus's maps, otherwise lost, as a source

Not if the meat is real meat and the cheese is real cheese.
However, if the "meat" is a veggieburger, it can be kosher, or if the cheese is fake, non-dairy "cheese".
So if God had caused it to rain tofu burgers and Cheez-Whiz from heaven, the Israelites would have been a-ok eating it.

I have consulted my arabic/english dictionary and I see the bit in Canada says "Infidels", the bit in the US says "more infidels", the bit in Brazil says "not much here" and the bit in Argentina says "infidels and their 9 year old daughters". The piece at the bottom says, "all ours, ripe for the picking"
Oh BTW, if "they" believe the earth is flat and they cant see the Americas from their window I guess it must mean that the Americas are on the other side of the dice.

It's processed cheese, the main difference between that & "real" cheese is that the whey is reintroduced into the mix.

Saw the same show. It has whey, oil, and various emulsifiers and stabilizers added to actual cheese, and then it is melted and mixed together.

Nothing. If you're a vegetarian, everything you eat is kosher. Just don't have blue cheese. Mold isn't kosher.
And you need to very carefully wash all the vegetables to make sure no insects are on them, because insects aren't kosher (except for a few specific species of locust, and those are only allowed for communities that have a tradition of eating them and can tell which ones are kosher).

Isn't cheese a mold?
They arent all exposed to mold. They ae exposed to rennens and acids which change the texture and curdle the milk. The liquid is drained off (whey) and the solidsare preserved (cheese).
Soft-ripened cheeses such as Brie and Camembert are made by allowing white Penicillium candida or P. camemberti mold to grow on the outside of a soft cheese for a few days or weeks. The mold forms a white crust and contributes to the smooth, runny, or gooey textures and more intense flavors of these aged cheeses. Goats' milk cheeses are often treated in a similar manner, sometimes with white molds (Chèvre-Boîte) and sometimes with blue.
Blue-mold cheeses like Roquefort, Gorgonzola, and Stilton are produced by inoculating loosely pressed curds with Penicillium roqueforti or Penicillium glaucum molds. The mold grows within the cheese as it ages. These cheeses have distinct blue veins and, often, assertive flavors. Their texture can be soft or firm.

No, only blue cheese is moldy.
Cheese itself is made from curdled milk. Cream cheese involves some kind of bacteria (trying to remember the details from the Modern Marvels show on cheese).

How about matzoh-rella? Is that kosher?
As long as it isn't made with natural rennet. Rennet is a problem because it is taken from calves under a week old, and that makes them unkosher.
You see, it is forbidden to sacrifice an animal under a week old, and if we cannot sacrifice it to G-d, we certainly can't use it for ourselves.

It has to be made by Jews.
This is because when the kasruth rules were made, most people were pagans, and their wine would be used in idol worship. There is a strict prohibition against Jews using any object that was used in idol worship.

Actually, yes. There is a gene linked to weight loss in smokers:
What keeps smokers thin
6 May 2009, 1300 hrs IST, ANI
WASHINGTON: Previous studies have shown that smokers have less body fat as compared to non-smokers. Now, a new study by US researchers may help
explain the reason.
For the study, researchers from Weill Medical College of Cornell University New York evaluated the levels of alpha2-zinc-glycoprotein1 (AZGP1), a gene linked to weight loss, in 37 healthy non-smokers and 55 healthy smokers.
They found that AZGP1 levels were higher in smokers than non-smokers.
They could not directly prove that smoking induced increases in AZGP1 are enough to mediate weight loss, but they speculate that the increased AZGP1 levels in smokers could be one mechanism contributing to the weight difference between smokers and non-smokers.
This study is published in the May issue of CHEST, the peer-reviewed journal of the American.

Actually, yes. There is a gene linked to weight loss in smokers:
What keeps smokers thin
6 May 2009, 1300 hrs IST, ANIWASHINGTON: Previous studies have shown that smokers have less body fat as compared to non-smokers.

Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist.
"'39" was Brian May's attempt to do "sci-fi skiffle." The B-side of "You're My Best Friend" and one of the band's most popular songs, "'39" relates the tale of a group of space explorers who embark on what is, from their perspective, a year-long voyage. Upon their return, however, they realize that a hundred years have passed, due to the time dilation effect in Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity, and the loved ones they left behind are now all dead.[3] Because the "year of '39" resembles 1939, some[4] have speculated that this is actually a song about the beginning of World War II but this is not the case. There are backing vocals by Mercury as well as very high and fairly low harmonies by Taylor, and some falsettos by Taylor.

Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist.
Interesting -
May studied physics at Imperial College London, graduating with a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in both Physics and Mathematics and ARCS with Upper Second-Class Honours. He then proceeded to study for a Ph.D degree, also at the Imperial College London departments of Physics and Mathematics, and was part way through this Ph.D programme, studying reflected light from interplanetary dust and the velocity of dust in the plane of the Solar System, when Queen became successful.
He abandoned his physics doctorate but did co-author two scientific research papers: MgI Emission in the Night-Sky Spectrum (1972)[7] and An Investigation of the Motion of Zodiacal Dust Particles (Part I) (1973),[8] which were based on May's observations at the Teide Observatory in Tenerife. He is the co-author of Bang! – The Complete History of the Universe with Patrick Moore and Chris Lintott, which was published in October 2006.[9]
More than 30 years after he started his research, in October 2007 he completed his Ph.D. thesis in astrophysics[10], entitled A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud[11], passed his viva voce, and performed the required corrections.[12][13][14][15] He officially graduated at the postgraduate awards ceremony held in the Royal Albert Hall, on the afternoon of Wednesday 14 May 2008.

It is interesting to look at the Middle East, especially "Palestine" and Transjordan as Soviet doctrine would ave seen the area just prior to the creation of Israel.
I doubt that Hamas would like what it shows. I doubt that very much.

Mrs. Hawk thinks Allison doesn't have a good fan base for the show like the boys do. I might agree, but she absolutely rocked the Joplin song, and I don't care too much for Joplin.
re: #405 opnion
For such a young girl, she has real moxie. I have come to appreciate Janis Joplin more & more& that Allison just killed it.
I actually knew about Alison Iraheta long before this season of American Idol, because I watched her win the Spanish-language version of the show, on Telemundo. (She was 14 at the time.) Back then, there were all these videos she had taken of herself practicing at home at the ages of 12, 13 and 14. She had posted them on YouTube, and I stumbled across them after she was cruising to an unstoppable victory in the Telemundo idol show. Those practice videos were jaw-dropping. I thought first that she must be lip-synching, but no -- she'd stop and mess up and start again sometimes. I actually sent links to those videos to some friends, saying, "Can you believe this 13-year-old girl? She's the best singer I've ever heard!"
Now that she's more famous, the American idol producers got all those videos removed, unfortunately.
I hardly ever watch TV, but I did watch some Idol episodes this year, just to catch her. I thought she might win, but alas, no -- tweener girls dominate the voting, and they always vote for the "cute guys" exclusively.

Trent Reznor has some issues with Apple
Thanks Apple for the clear description of the problem — as in, what do you want us to change to get past your stupid f***ing standards?
And while we’re at it, I’ll voice the same issue I had with Wal-Mart years ago, which is a matter of consistency and hypocrisy. Wal-Mart went on a rampage years ago insisting all music they carry be censored of all profanity and “clean” versions be made for them to carry. Bands (including Nirvana) tripped over themselves editing out words, changing album art, etc to meet Wal-Mart’s standards of decency — because Wal-Mart sells a lot of records. NIN refused, and you’ll notice a pretty empty NIN section at any Wal-Mart. My reasoning was this: I can understand if you want the moral posturing of not having any “indecent” material for sale — but you could literally turn around 180 degrees from where the NIN record would be and purchase the film “Scarface” completely uncensored, or buy a copy of Grand Theft Auto where you can be rewarded for beating up prostitutes. How does that make sense?
You can buy The Downward F***ing Spiral on iTunes, but you can’t allow an iPhone app that may have a song with a bad word somewhere in it. Geez, what if someone in the forum in our app says F*** or C***? I suppose that also falls into indecent material. Hey Apple, I just got some SPAM about f***ing hot asian teens THROUGH YOUR MAIL PROGRAM. I just saw two guys having explicit anal sex right there in Safari! On my iPhone!
Come on Apple, think your policies through and for f***’s sake get your app approval scenario together.

Interesting map. Notice how the East-West dimensions of the continents are distorted relative to the North-South ones? That is a result of the lack of good chronometers back in the day. Latitude could be measured very accurately, even in Classical times, but in order to measure longitude, you need to have an accurate timepiece that works independent of the Sun, because you measure your longitude, typically, by noting the hour, relative to your starting point, at which local noon occurs.

Writing as another Badger on this fine site, Door County is a bit too "commercial" and yuppified for my tastes. While it is an attractive place, there are too many snobs.

You probably already know about it, but there's an excellent book on this topic - Longitude, by Dava Sobel. Sobel is an extremely good writer and researcher, and makes the topic vastly engrossing. A great, great read - if you haven't read it, you need to.
Also made into a miniseries by, I think, The History Channel, which was also quite well done. But Sobel's prose is outstanding.
Also, give her Galileo's Daughter a try. Galileo's story, illuminated by a collection of letters she sent to him from the convent she lived in, and fleshed out with biographical detail. Casts very interesting lights on the traditional "Church versus Science" presentation of his story, and has a stunning, surprise ending proving that art is always a pale imitation of life.

An amazing map. You can find excellent stuff at the Grand Bazaar.
If you go down the back alleys nearby, there's a less-than-grand local bazaar where you can get some of the same things for 1/10th the price. Unfortunately, I found this after I did most of my shopping.
484 | Areopagitica Thu, May 7, 2009 6:04:48pm |
Charles,
Cool map but not sure if its genuine. The paper looks glossy in the photo. Is this printed on vellum or some other animal hide? That is something you probably wouldn't see in the 17th century but more like the 12th or 13th centuries. To the best of my knowledge, the earliest known printing of an arabic book is from the mid 1500's. If its paper, shine a flashlight behind a blank part of the map and see if you can see chain lines or a watermark going through the paper. These lines are unique to paper from the 1500's until around 1800. This is because the paper would be hand made. If you don't see those lines, I would be very suspicious. Also, if this came from an atlas, I don't think you'd see the kind of crease through the center of the map. It almost looks like it was in a book and a whole group of pages was bound in separating the entire map into two halves that you couldn't see at once. I've handled 16th and 17th century European atlases and the maps would never be folded and bound in that manner. Do some more research on this if you have time and keep us lizards updated if you are going to appear on Antiques Roadshow.

re: #3 Racer X
I see no ice whatsoever. They had global warming back then?
That is a really good observation. Look at the polar maps (if that is what the small circular maps are). It seems odd, but the map in the southwestern corner of the map looks like the Arctic Ocean, and the map in the northeastern corner looks like a map of the continent of Antarctica. I don't know why the north pole would be on the map's south, and the south pole is on the map's north. But if that is what they are, how did they know what part of the north polar ice cap was ice and what was land?

re: #484 Areopagitica
I agree after looking more closely that this map is most likely not genuine. It looks to be a recent copy/tracing and very recent coloring of a 16th century style map similar in style to the Turkish Admiral Piri Reis. See link to example of his Map of Americas completed in early 1500's.
Piri Reis Map of 1513
The damp staining and foxing are also a clue that the map was done later over whatever was originally under the map. There is no sign that these stains and fox marks are on the map, and the damp staining would have protruded into the map area as these marks are circular in the way they naturally spread.

At $20, you got yourself a nice souvenir. Not a lot to pay for a hand-crafted piece of art you can frame.
Finding real maps and legitimate brass scribe sets and so on for great prices, is hard work. I have a friend who has a few items he picked up in Aleppo, but it helps to be fluent in Arabic and of course to know what you're looking at. The tribal carpet industry also suffers from this. Some of the Pakistani carpet makers spread brand new carpets over the road and drive over them to age them and get better prices.
Still, if you love it and you get a price that won't make you wince whenever you recall it, who cares? I don't buy this stuff for resale - I buy it because it's love at first sight and I have to have it. Now, excuse me while I go walk barefoot across the lamb's wool Shirazi carpet I bought in Riyadh a few years back. Mmmmmmm.... Bliss!
