I broke 100 in my VW Squareback — blew the seals and left me calling for help.

I had two cars early in my 20s. One was a Plymouth Valiant and the other was a Pontiac Catalina (both early 1970s models—actually, the Catalina might have been late 70s). Anyway, I took them both out to a long stretch of rarely traveled central Illinois roadway (Bondville Road, for those keeping score). I have no idea how fast the Valiant was going. The speedometer was broken. But I doubt I broke 100. The Catalina broke 100 without a sweat. Massive engine.

None of that is truly noteworthy. But I was bored, depressed, and alone at night. It’s a wonder I’m alive.
