Some alignments are purely natural, others are human-induced but not intentional, then there are those that were created by man for specific purposes and to occur on specific dates and times. One of the most remarkable of this latter kind was the sun dagger discovered high on Fajada Butte in Chaco Canyon. These ancient astronomers created a time piece that marks both the summer and winter solstices through a petroglyph carved into the rock and the precise arrangement of some very heavy stones. Unfortunately, this amazing sight has been damaged through too many people trapsing around the rocks, causing them to settle and, thus, lose that precise alignment. The Park Service has since closed off access to the Butte to protect what’s left.

That’s the one I thought of, in my indistinct, foggy way. My husband went to Chaco Canyon, I didn’t go on that trip.
