MyPillow’s Mike Lindell Says FBI Surrounded Him and Seized His Cellphone at Hardee’s

Headline of the day: MyPillow’s Mike Lindell Says FBI Seized His Cellphone at Hardee’s.

“The FBI came after me and took my phone,” he said in the clip. “They surrounded me in a Hardee’s and took my phone that I run all my business, everything with. What they’ve done is weaponize—the FBI, it’s disgusting. I don’t have a computer. Everything I do [is] off that phone. Everything was on there. And they told me not to tell anybody. Here’s an order: ‘Don’t tell anybody!’ ‘OK, I won’t!’ Well, I am.”

Anton Petrov has a video today discussing the Silurian Hypothesis, which was a thought experiment dreamed up by a couple of scientists around 2017 about whether we could detect prior, non-human civilizations that may have existed millions of years ago on this planet. The title comes from a Dr Who episode about the Silurians, a civilization that existed on Earth before humans.

OH HAI!

We are in New York again, getting settled into our hotel room. The Delta pilot promised that it would take 1 hr and 5 minutes to fly from DTW to LGA and so it did, if you only count the time spent in the air. Nothing was said about the 30 minutes waiting for takeoff and the 45 minutes after landing, taxiing to the gate.

On the opposite runway planes were lining up and taking off one right after another. I thought planes were supposed to wait for like 3 minutes between takeoffs but was told that is only for jumbo jets like 747’s or as they are now called, “sky trucks.”

I gave some generous tips for the wheelchair pushers because they deserve it. Also in Detroit this little girl pushed me & Zed, by herself, to the very end of the terminal.

Yep. Heavies leave more turbulence in their wake, and it is dangerous to take off into their slipstream. I believe there was a notable airplane crash that involved a pilot taking off too close behind a heavy wide-body jet.

Some more details on how the current Ukrainian offensives were planned. Sounds like the Ukrainians did their homework correctly.

*snip*
One critical moment [for the original Ukrainian offensive concept of operations] this summer came during a war game with U.S. and Ukrainian officials aimed at testing the success of a broad offensive across the south. The exercise, reported earlier by CNN, suggested such an offensive would fail. Armed with the American skepticism, Ukrainian military officials went back to Mr. Zelensky.

*snip*

Together Britain, the United States and Ukraine conducted an assessment of the new [second] plan, trying to war game it once more. This time officials from the three countries agreed it would work — and give Mr. Zelensky what he wanted: a big, clear victory.

*snip*

Before the counteroffensive, Ukraine’s armed forces sent the United States a detailed list of weapons they needed to make the plan successful, according to the Ukrainian officer.

For all of you who might be interested, one of the commenter ast Balloon Juice, gwangung, wrote a play, and while the performance is over, you can buy access to the video for $10.

Here’s his description of the play:

The logline is “Pirate Queen vs. Immortal Sorceress in 19th Century China”, but it’s REALLY a mash up of comic books, Red Sonja/Conan, and the real life pirate queen Ching Shih—all combined into something I tried to get as close as an MCU movie (Marvel Cinematic Universe) on stage as I possibly could.

Some trailers and the link to see the video is in the post: balloon-juice.com

The level of copium among the Putinistas on Twitter has skyrockted since the weekend. This time last week, they were all insisting that Russia had “won” and that Ukraine needed to come to the negotiation table to accept humiliating terms because otherwise Putin was going to “escalate.” Now the shitlords that haven’t gone radio silent are grasping at any thin straw they can, the most popular seeming to be repeating propaganda that the counteroffensive into Kherson has “failed” and the UA has suffered “massive losses.”

Obama tried the same thing in 2010 and it cost the party massively. Absent Dobbs and tragedies like Uvalde totally upending the political calculus, we’d probably be debating right now not whether the GQP can retake Congress but just how massive their majorities would be.

re: #65 Targetpractice

while I completely understand your take and your frustration….. I will register a small token resistance to it…

Biden had the better part of four plus decades of work in the halls of Congress, long relationships of working across the aisle that Obama didn’t have (and with the racist bent of the GOP, would likely never have), as such, he had personal friendships that he was banking on..

The hope that once Trump was out of office, the fever pitch that had gripped the GOP was hoped to have been banked, there was the perfect opportunity to see if the GOP would come to back to its senses….

There was a LOT to unfuck post Trump… still dealing with the Pandemic, supporting people to get thru it, the economy, leaving Afghanistan and the cleaning out of the government stables of all things Trump (and its still ongoing) and rebuild the civil service; so trying to find common ground was essential, it was part of his campaign, so he had to make the gesture.

To not make the gesture, would have meant crucifixion in the media (which hasn’t been kind to him anyways) and is always wired for GOP talking points, and if those gestures had not been made, it would have given credence to all of that crap about bipartisan unity that the GOP tries to ride to death, while they piss on every gesture that doesn’t capitulate to all of their demands. While us political junkies understood, everyone who gets informed by a half hour of CNN would have had an even worse impression of what was going down.

and it’s not all just on Biden, lets face it, we would be in a better place if Sinema and Manchin hadn’t been busy being political prima-donnas, which gave a pass to the GOP to continue to press their 50 votes against, no matter what the legislation offered, because everyone else was so focused on the Dems capturing votes 49 and 50.

so yeah, I wish that he could have just started coming in and kicking ass and taking names (because there’s no time to waste) but I can only guess at the blowback he would have received if he did so….

It’s already been cancelled. There’s 13 episodes.

They do tie up the main storyline (and some subplots) in a satisfying way, and leave some good openings for what could have been a 2nd season but instead is an opening for if somebody wants to revive it in a few years. I found it worth my time.

LOL poor old Lukashenko. He’s in quite a pickle, isn’t he?

I think on the one hand, he reckons that Putin has failed spectacularly and it’s now only a matter of time before Russia is defeated at the hands of Ukraine. On the other hand, he needs to stay in Putin’s good graces, at least for the time being…because otherwise he and his regime are finished and he’ll likely find himself getting the Ceaușescu treatment. He’s playing for time and a bit of wiggle room to make sure his position is firmly consolidated before Russia slinks home in shame and defeat.

GOP Elections Commissioner Arrested by the FBI
politicalwire.com

More R vote fraud!

How widespread is republican malfeasance?

The original article (different from you’re link) notes that others were involved in this (Schofield) case, but wait! There’s more!

The Times Union reported in June that Schofield had become a focus of an FBI investigation that led to the guilty plea earlier this year of Kimberly Ashe-McPherson, a Troy councilwoman.

The reference above to Ashe-McPherson? She was a republican office holder who had to resign. is to a 2018 republican vote fraud scandal.

Kim Ashe-McPherson resigned from the Troy City Council following her pleading guilty to federal identity theft charges for casting votes in the names of other people.

The Republican, who was reelected to the council last year, admitted in federal court to casting ballots in the names of other people in both the primary and general election.

As part of a plea agreement, she resigned, and faces up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000 and three years of supervised release.

And this is just what we are finding out about.

Yep. He promoted Paulus to Field Marshal the day before Paulus surrendered; he did that on the grounds that no German Field Marshal had ever surrendered before in their military history.

And the very next day, Paulus became the first German Field Marshal to surrender. Hitler was, by all accounts, furious.

My DeSantis Watch continues. I watch DeSantis so you don’t have to.

businessinsider.com

DeSantis lays clear his disdain for “Free Enterprise” when it doesn’t suit his own personal agenda. By stating his developing policy of limiting business power and interests, he is using rhetoric from pretty much any standard 70-‘s 80’s leftist pundit, except he is wielding it not for the most vulnerable in society, but to make sure the dominant plurality get to exercise their cruelty and punch down on others. DeSantis is a fascist.

He continues his populist fascist pivot and lays bare any notion of Reagan-type hands-off approach to business is now out the window. Reagan is now being written out of Republican history. DeSantis is hijacking previously leftist policy tools in order to further a platform of violence to the weaker and anger against change and evolution.

Some alignments are purely natural, others are human-induced but not intentional, then there are those that were created by man for specific purposes and to occur on specific dates and times. One of the most remarkable of this latter kind was the sun dagger discovered high on Fajada Butte in Chaco Canyon. These ancient astronomers created a time piece that marks both the summer and winter solstices through a petroglyph carved into the rock and the precise arrangement of some very heavy stones. Unfortunately, this amazing sight has been damaged through too many people trapsing around the rocks, causing them to settle and, thus, lose that precise alignment. The Park Service has since closed off access to the Butte to protect what’s left.

electoral-vote.com on Lindsey’s bill

Usually, when a politician does something like this, we are able to hazard a pretty good guess as to what’s going on. But we’ve had about 12 hours to consider this one, and we’ve thought about what Graham is doing, from top to bottom, and we’re kinda stumped. The theory that initially occurred to us is that Graham was providing cover for candidates running for statewide office. Recall, for example, the ad for Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Scott Jensen (R) that we wrote about yesterday, where he insists that abortion is a federal issue and not a state one. In theory, Graham’s bill would allow folks like Jensen to pass the buck on what is clearly a losing issue, and to deflect the heat to senators who are not up this year or who are from safe red states.

However, that theory is clearly not correct. If it was, then surely Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and others among Graham’s Republican Senate colleagues would be on board with the plan. But, by all indications, they were all gobsmacked

This is the GOP’s Achille’s Heel, they are all tripping over each other trying to show off who is the most doctrinaire Conservative that they fail to keep their mouths shut until the damage is done.

That is what Dobbs did to them and now they are doubling down (dobbling down?) on it.

So aggravating. Why don’t more people care about protecting history?

This kind of care needs to be taught. The history of people who came before, what they had culturally, what endures, how fragile it is. The remoteness of Chaco is remarkable, so bad behavior can run amok.

When I lived in NM, there were cultural remnants strewn everywhere in National Forests and on other govt. property, as well as private land. If I extended a mountain bike ride beyond the most commonly used trails, I’d be running over pottery shards with amazing art on them. In the middle of the trail, in abundance. A few might have been pocketed. Mr. w befriended a neighbor who had retired from his ranch outside of town, and had quite a collection in his basement. The Museum at WNMU was one of my final visits before we moved.

Is Lauren Boebert a Christian nationalist?
Experts say yes. “This is not compatible with democracy,” said Kristin Kobes DuMez, an expert on Christian nationalism

I worry about DuMez, she is a professor at Calvin College, and I don’t know if she has tenure. That said, she may have decided to throw caution to the wind.

The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman reported on Donald Trump’s presidency extensively during his four years in the White House, and she does some more Trump-related reporting in her forthcoming book, “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America.” According to CNN, one of revelations in the book (which has an October 4 release date on Amazon) is that after Trump lost the 2020 presidential election, he declared, “I’m just not going to leave.” And some Trump critics are wondering why Haberman didn’t report that statement earlier.

Before the 2020 election, MAGA Republicans accused “Real Time” host Bill Maher of having “Trump derangement syndrome” when he warned repeatedly that Trump would refuse to admit defeat and try to stay in the White House if he lost the election. But sure enough, Trump lost the election and did exactly what Maher feared he would do. And Haberman, in “Confidence Man,” cites an example of the type of behavior that Maher and other Trump critics predicted.

CNN’s Jeremy Herb reports, “Trump’s insistence that he would not be leaving the White House, which has not been previously reported, adds new detail to the chaotic post-election period in which Trump’s refusal to accept his defeat and numerous efforts to overturn the election result led to the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump rioters.”

CNN’s reporting on “Confidence Man” is receiving a lot of discussion on Twitter.

The separation distance between flights taking off or landing is dictated by the plane type.

You need to give more time between the A380 or B747x and the plane that follows due to wake vortices that can mess up the following plane’s aerodynamics. Smaller planes have smaller vortices, and allow tighter groupings.

electoral-vote.com on Lindsey’s bill

Let’s not forget that Trump has turned against McConnell; Graham’s loyalty is to Trump and not the Senate Minority leader. Perhaps this approach was taken as an effort to damage McConnell and make it easier to replace him with someone more to Trump’s liking.

Actually you can use miles in lieu of time in a radar environment, which nowadays is from the ground and up. So in essence if you needed 2 minutes for a Boeing 737 behind a 747 , in radar you need 5 miles behind (the super you need 6 miles) to have separation, so you can get the miles in less time than waiting the full 2 minutes. That greatly increases the amount of traffic that can move instead of going only by time.

Q: The Winged Serpent. One of the all-time great cheapo thrillers that made the 1980s fun. Starring Michael “Mr. Personality” Moriarty

On that one, I remember Roger Ebert’s review, which starts thusly:

A few days after “Q” was screened at the Cannes Film Festival (under its original title, “The Winged Serpent”), the following conversation took place between Samuel Z. Arkoff, the film’s producer, and Rex Reed, the critic:

Reed: Sam! I just saw “The Winged Serpent”! What a surprise! All that dreck—and right in the middle of it, a great Method performance by Michael Moriarty!

Arkoff: The dreck was my idea.

I believe him. Arkoff has been producing films for thirty years now, and even if he was honored with a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, his heart still lies with shots of a giant flying lizard attacking a woman in a bikini on top of a Manhattan skyscraper. He’s just that kinda guy.

Busy day in Central Asia, and not good for Putin.

Goes back to various articles I’ve read about China’s “Belt and Road Initiative”. While it’s usually presented mainly a transportation project (if a hugely ambitious one), analysts have noted that a long-term effect (the sort *China*, in general, usually thinks about) would be to tie the “‘Stans” of Central Asia into a Chinese-oriented economic bloc - and one which would lead those countries away from Russian influence/domination.
And, AFAICT, Kazakhstan is the first front in that project.

Citing concerns over racist and transphobic material, Dungeons & Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast is trying to take back an old game to prevent its publication, according to a report in Polygon. It’s a complicated situation, but the game, Star Frontiers New Genesis, is a reboot of a classic 1982 game with some very problematic content.

A little backstory: Wizards of the Coast purchased TSR Hobbies (the entity) in 1997. TSR had previously published a slew of roleplaying games, including Dungeons & Dragons, Gangbusters (a 1920s mob game), and Star Frontiers, the subject of the newest kerfuffle. Wizards allowed the TSR trademark to expire in 2000. In 2012, TSR Games was founded as separate game publisher, named in honor of Gary Gygax’s original TSR Hobbies, using the exact same trademark as the original company. TSR Games has recently split into two separate publishers, one headed by a man named Jayson Elliot, and the other helmed by Ernie Gygax (Gary Gygax’s son) and Justin LaNasa, the latter of whom technically owns the copyright. Both are using TSR Games as a name.

This latest conflict involves Wizards of the Coast attempting to shut down re-publication of Star Frontiers by TSR Games (LaNasa), in advance of its release. According to the injunction (which you can read here), Wizards is alleging that the TSR trademark is still associated with its brand by its continued sales online, and that TSR Games will irreparably damage their brand because the current draft of Star Frontiers is exceptionally racist, transphobic, and bigoted.

It works great if you can mentally assign anyone that died into the category of “was always going die” or “deserved to die.”

The point isn’t efficacy, the point is retention of power.

When your axiom is “lives are not equal” it’s a very easy process to just let people die than do things that challenge the notion that the Better Kinds Of People are not entitled to everything they have.

We’re just doing the thing we always do with the global south—that place where people just inevitably die and suffer, ask no questions about how the global north benefits from that desperation—with a smaller in-group.

According to reports, the 29-year-old member of boy band Got7 held a livestream on Douyin recently and got curious when filters of sunglasses and sombreros suddenly popped up on his screen. He asked what they were and was shocked to find out those were presents that his supporters had spent real money on.

Each virtual present has monetary value that the receiver can convert into cash. His expression reportedly changed and he said: “Oh no no no! Oh my god,” before ending the livestream abruptly.

Jackson, who just released his new album Magic Man earlier this month, then continued his livestream on another platform Weibo and told users sternly: “I don’t want gifts, don’t do that.”

I recall an argument for putting people back to work: “Sure, people are dying of Covid, but they also die of poverty!”

People do not die of poverty. They die from malnutrition, lack of proper housing and medical care, etc.

Because in our society, poor people are not considered to be entitled to such things.

People living in Estonia on a Russian pension have not been paid in the third quarter as the Estonian Social Insurance Board has not received pension fund money from Russia. Q3 pensions should have been paid out by September 10.

“Based on a pension insurance agreement between Estonia and Russia, the Estonian Social Insurance Board pays out Russian Federation pensions to people living in Estonia once it has received the financial instruments from the other side. For reasons beyond the board’s control, resources for Q3 pension payments have not arrived from the Russian pension fund,” Kati Kümnik, head of the board’s benefits department, told ERR.

“Our information suggests Russia has attempted to make the payment twice but has not succeeded,” Kümnik said, adding that she sees several ways to solve the problem.

After I arrived, I was ushered into what I thought was the green room. But instead of being wired with a microphone or taken to a stage, I just sat there at a plain round table as my audience was brought to me: five super-wealthy guys - yes, all men - from the upper echelon of the hedge fund world. After a bit of small talk, I realized they had no interest in the information I had prepared about the future of technology. They had come with questions of their own.

“If we didn’t test, we wouldn’t have so many cases!”

A girl friend called yesterday, very distraught, because a former boyfriend had refused to test, despite upper respiratory symptoms, because he was sure it was just his normal seasonal ailment. He then developed some intestinal problems but was still resisting any tests. He was intending to continue with his normal activities, which involved visiting with others. I agreed with her that the only thing she could do is urge him to test. Several hours later she called back and was happy to report he did finally accede to her wishes, tested — and was positive. Now her mission was to persuade him to tell his doctor and see if paxlovid was still possible, given his delay in confirming the diagnosis.
