They were only trying to help the people who couldn’t afford and shouldn’t have been trying to purchase a home. What’s wrong with that?

What is wrong with it is they are not helping them by putting them into a situation that is going to lead to them having their home foreclosed on. Help them by providing economic opportunities (jobs) that will ensure they are in a situation to afford a house. Help them by providing education on money management. No one is helped by being put into a situation that is inevitable going to lead to failure.
