I think the larger, more frightening shift is what I’ll call a ‘factual illiteracy’ throughout the country. So much of our citizenry — of every political persuasion — now displays a lack of critical thinking that worries me.

This may bring me in for a round of lumps, but I think technology has a great deal to do with that. The Internet levels all utterings; the spoutings of some loon occupy the same pixels as the reasoned and contrary opinions of, say Thomas Sowell and Christopher Hitchens. And the same pixels as, more alarmingly, actual factual reportage.

People have lost the ability to distinguish among those things. And I see it on the left and right in similar proportions. Quite possible the center as well, although the center is more static, so it’s hard to tell.
